Linking traffic streams and display elements defines which traffic stream influences which signal at the intersection. A traffic stream can influence several display elements in different ways.

  • UN-conditional display elements: This means that display elements in these columns are switched on with the ON command of the traffic stream. They are solely dependent on the switching on of the relevant traffic stream. They are always switched when the traffic stream is switched on or off. UN-conditional display elements can be used if, for example, two display elements are required for signalling a traffic stream with several lanes and the same stop line.

Figure 33: UN-conditional display elements

Traffic streams do not necessarily have to have a UN-conditional display element. For special situations, traffic streams can be used without a display element. It should be noted that the state of the traffic stream is formed by an OR link between the signal states of the assigned UN-conditional display elements. This means that a traffic stream is green as long as an assigned UN-conditional display element is green.

  • AND-conditional Display elements: For the display elements in the AND-conditional columns, the system checks whether the same display element is also entered in the same column for other traffic streams. An AND-conditional display element only switches on if all traffic streams linked to it switch on. If a traffic stream is or is switched off, the display element is also switched off. In the case of combinations with the same display element in different columns of the AND-conditional display elements, these are OR-linked with each other.

Figure 34: AND-conditional display elements

AND-conditional display elements only switch to green when all traffic streams to which the same display element is assigned receive a switch-on command. As soon as a traffic stream switches to red, the assigned AND-conditional display element also switches to red.

  • OR-conditional Display elements: The display elements in the OR-conditional columns are switched on OR-linked column by column. This means that a display element switches on when a traffic stream assigned to it switches on.

Figure 35: OR-conditional display elements

OR-conditional display elements turn green as soon as one of the traffic streams to which the same display element is assigned receives a switch-on command.

  • Combination 1: It is permitted to enter display elements in the AND-conditional columns and in the OR-conditional columns. In such a case, the conditions from the AND area are used to switch the display element on and the definitions from the OR area are used to switch it off.
  • Combination 2: If a display element is entered in the UN-conditional area, it must NOT also be entered in the AND or OR-conditional areas. Failure to observe this rule can lead to unauthorised switching commands for the outputs.

It is also possible for different traffic streams to control the same display element.

MAIN, UN_x

UN-conditional display element

The main display element (MAIN) is an UN-conditional display element. This means that display elements in these columns are switched on with the ON command of the traffic stream. They are solely dependent on the switching on of the authoritative traffic stream. With the exception of so-called pseudo traffic streams, a MAIN display element must be assigned to each traffic stream.

AND_x

AND-conditional display element

For the display elements in the AND-conditional columns, the system checks whether the same display element is also entered in the same column for other traffic streams. An AND-conditional display element only switches on if all traffic streams linked to it switch on. If a traffic stream is or will be switched off, the display element will also switch off. In the case of combinations with the same display element in different columns of the AND-conditional display elements, these are linked to each other with or.

OR_x

OR-conditional display element

The display elements of the entries in the OR-conditional columns are switched on OR-linked column by column. This means that a display element switches on when a traffic stream assigned to it switches on. In case of combinations with the same display element in different columns of the OR-conditional display elements, these are linked among each other with and.
